Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplemental in Southwest Florida

Individuals are eligible to sign up for Medicare three months before their 65th birthday, the month of, and three months afterward. There are two parts to original Medicare. Part A covers hospital stays, while Part B covers doctor’s visits and outpatient care. Medicare Advantage

is like a bundled-up version of original Medicare, also known as “Part C” or “MA Plans.” Medicare Advantage plans usually include Part D (prescription drug coverage), and it offers additional benefits that original Medicare does not, such as dental, vision, hearing care, wellness programs, and gym memberships.

or Medigap helps fill in the missing ‘gaps’ in coverage for Medicare. The unpredictable out-of-pocket costs for deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments can make the affordability of Medicare nonexistent for many seniors. There are ten different Medicare Supplement plans, and it’s important to know that they offer various benefits and coverage solutions. Three plans: Plan F, Plan G, and Plan N are the most popular and account for over 80 percent of all supplement plans sold.

Medicare Enrollment Periods

Each year, Medicare health plans can change, possibly affecting your premiums, deductibles, and other benefits, or discontinue coverage altogether. It’s important that you familiarize yourself with these changes so you can plan accordingly. • Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) occurs when an individual “ages into Medicare.” You are eligible to sign up for Medicare three months before your 65th birthday, the month of, and three months afterward. You may also be eligible sooner if you have a disability, End of Stage Renal Disease, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.
• The Open Enrollment Period (OEP) or General Enrollment Period occurs from Jan 1 through Mar 31 and allows you to change from one Medicare Advantage plan to another, add a Part D plan, or disenroll and switch to something else. Coverage begins on the first day of the following month.
• Annual Enrollment Period (AEP) occurs Oct 15 through Dec 7 and is the time when you can change your Medicare Advantage plan and/or Part D coverage and/or return to original Medicare. Any change updates begin on Jan 1.
• Special Enrollment Period (SEP) is a qualifying life-changing event that allows you to enroll in a new health plan (if your current group insurance plan goes away or is canceled, you move, get married, etc.) If a 5-star plan(s) is available in your area, you can enroll or make changes within a 5-star plan during any time of the year.
